For the first time since 2006 in the Rajasthan Royals final, this is the first season in the Gujarat Titans’ IPL. The season saw the expansion of the league, with the addition of two new franchises.[5][6] Therefore, this was the second season to have ten teams, after the 2011 tournament.[7] Chennai Super Kings were the defending champions, having won their fourth title during the previous season.
